Matt here! I’m a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC), Functional Range Conditioning mobility specialist (FRCms), jiu-jitsu practitioner, lifelong learner who has always played sports, and coach who loves nothing more than teaching others how to improve, particularly as it pertains to athletic performance, regardless of the arena.
I grew up playing competitive sports (soccer, football, fencing were just a few) and eventually specialized in ice hockey after falling in love with the game at age 12. After 8 years of hard work and determination, countless “no’s,” failures, and cuts I was invited to play NCAA hockey at a small Division III school in Massachusetts. It wasn’t Boston College or Minnesota, but for a kid from Virginia, which has never been considered a hockey “hotbed,” it was a dream come true. My career as a player ended there, but I was fortunate enough to have had a few very talented coaches and trainers along the way who had successfully planted the seed, inspiring me to teach the next generation how to maximize their potential.
Flash forward a few years later and I was stuck-how was I going to make a career out of coaching? Where do I start? Who do I talk to? Through a series of interestingly-timed and very fortunate events, I quit searching for a job as a French teacher and earned a job coaching AAA youth hockey in San Jose, CA. I dropped everything and moved to a place I’d never been before (holy cow it’s expensive here) to work with people I didn’t know, coaching at a level at which I never played as a kid growing up on the east coast (what am I even doing?). After honing my coaching ability with the San Jose Jr. Sharks and various stints with USA Hockey, I made the transition into the weight room and now own and operate Victory High Performance, a 2,400 square foot performance facility where our mission is to help people move, feel, and perform better!
Brendan is a fourth year Public Health major at San Jose State University where he is also the Vice President of their ACHA Division II Ice Hockey club. His ability to learn quickly and create deep bonds with the athletes he coaches make him a valuable asset to the Victory High Performance team!
